A Typical Day in the North Atlantic Skies – [TIME-LAPSE]

The UK air traffic control firm (NATS) have crunched their data on transatlantic flights to produce a stunning visualisation of the “North Atlantic Skies”. The animation covers a typical summer’s day in 2013.

Some statistics from NATS blog post:

  • On a typical July day there are around 30,000 flights across European airspace
  • Approximately a quarter fly within UK controlled airspace
  • The total distance flown by these aircraft is 25 million nautical miles. That’s 998 times around the Earth, or 104 trips to the Moon
  • On 21 June, 5,675 aircraft departed or arrived from UK airports, of which 2,295 departed from or arrived at Gatwick (894) or Heathrow (1,401)
  • 1,532 were overflights
  • The video is 1440x faster than real time

Spanning 10 years this EarthCam time-lapse videos shows the construction of the US National 9/11 Memorial Museum in New York.

Creating “The Kelpies” – [TIME-LAPSE]

Filmaker Walid Salhab presents a unique timelapse short film “The Kelpies” featuring footage captured within a live construction site. It covers the creation of a 30m tall stainless steel horse heads at The Helix in Scotland. The sculpture, created by artist Andy Scott, officially to the public next week.

The film was created

from over 60 days of stop-motion filming across 7 months, and tracking construction through to completion, this film uses over 12,000 individual photos, none of which have been edited or manipulated beyond settings inside the camera. Walid captured 120,000 individual images to create this seven minute masterpiece.
