London’s Most Common Surnames – [VISUALIZATION]

London Surnames

As part of his PdD research at the University College London’s Geography Dept., James Cheshire has produced a series of interactive maps of London show the relationship of common surnames to different London neighborhoods.

This map shows the 15 most frequent surnames in each Middle Super Output Area (MSOA) across Greater London. The colours represent the origin of the surname (*not necessarily* the person) derived from UCL’s Onomap Classification tool. The surnames have also been scaled by their total frequency in each MSOA.

He concludes:

The more you study these maps the more interesting, and perhaps complex, they become.  My final thoughts therefore appear a little contradictory. The first is that a surprising number of Londoners share the same name (especially with their immediate neighbours). The second is that despite the dominance of relatively few surnames at the top of the rankings, the further down the rankings you get the more you see of London’s population diversity.

Art of Animation – [VIDEO]

The latest short-film in the PBS Off/Book arts series exploring the art of animation:

From classic forms like hand drawn and stop-motion, to cutting-edge techniques like motion graphics and CGI, animation has a long history of creating style and poetry unachievable through live action film-making. It is a tool for educating, a place for experimentation and play, and a way of telling personal stories that reach the viewer with powerful visual metaphors.

Amazing Photo Transformation – [VIDEO]

Yesterday, Redditor JesusJones207 made the following appeal:

Hi Reddit Photoshop magicians. Well, my grandmother is very ill with alzheimer’s. At her brother’s house, we found this amazing photo. I took a picture with my phone, hoping that someone here would want to retouch it, and maybe add color? Thank you so much for your consideration!

A Redditor called IColoredItForYou responded, posting not the repaired, colourised photo, along with a video showing how he fixed it. He says it took him just about an hour total to complete the photo transformation!

Dancing Books – [VIDEO]

What happened with Sean Ohlenkamp and his wife have  decided to start organizing their book self.  Well, the results of their efforts last year are below, but this year they’ve taken it to the next level. They spent “many sleepless nights moving, stacking, and animating books at Type bookstore in Toronto”, and in the process created the beautiful stop-motion animation below.

You can’t do that with a kindle that’s for sure.

London’s ICN gallery is currently running an exhibition “Goldfish Salvation” by artist Riusuke Fukahori. His work transforms the gallery into the world of goldfish – his lifelong theme and passion. From the exhibition:

His unique style of painting uses acrylic on clear resin which is poured into containers, resulting in a three-dimensional appearance and lifelike vitality.

This video gives you a glimpse of his amazing painting process.
